Stirling Products Limited is an animal healthcare company focused on the development and commercialisation of metabolic modifiers and immune boosting agents for a range of indications in international animal healthcare markets. Stirling is a public Australian company (ASX:STI) headquartered in Perth, Australia with an operational facility in Prince Edward Island, Canada.
Stirling currently has two technology platforms in its product/development pipeline. The first is in the area of metabolic modification. Stirling is developing and commercialising technologies associated with its lead pharmaceutical compound - R-salbutamol (also known as R-albuterol) - a highly purified version of salbutamol, a well-established drug that has been used in the treatment of human asthma for more than 25 years.
Stirling's three technology platforms for R-salbutamol are:
1. Growth agents in livestock
2. Treatment for obesity in companion animals (dogs and cats)
3. Respiratory disorders in horses
(For a more detailed look at each technology platform click on the "Stirling's Product Candidates" button on the navigation menu).
The second is in the area of immune enhancement. In August 2007 Stirling Products acquired Progressive BioActives Inc, a Canadian company that has developed an extremely purified form of yeast beta glucan for the livestock industry. This product is known in the market as ProValeTM. Beta glucan is a natural immunopotentiator. In other words, when livestock species consume the beta glucan, their natural immune immunity is enhanced, reducing the need for antibiotics used as growth agents. This has significant applications in poultry, swine and aquaculture.
Stirling owns all of the intellectual property relating to the use of R-salbutamol in animal indications and for the use of ProVale in animal applications. In both cases, the company owns intellectual property relating to specific manufacturing processes or purification technology to support raw material manufacture. Collectively, the value of R-salbutamol applications across identified commercial markets is in the order of US$2 billion. ProValeTM is an example of a nutritional food additive. Estimates of the market potential for nutritional food additives in total are over US$1 billion.
Stirling understands that significant resources and expertise are required to support sales and distribution functions. These resources are capital and infrastructure heavy. The core resources of Stirling products will be used efficiently and effectively to bring products to market or to a stage of development where they become attractive candidates for partnerships and licensing arrangements.
R-salbutamol products are positioned to offer safe and effective alternatives for the currently exploited antibiotics and steroidal hormones, which continue to attract negative regulatory and public focus for their misuse. R-salbutamol has the ability to enhance growth rates, improve feeding efficiencies and through a process of repartitioning unique to beta agonists, provide enhanced carcass quality with more lean meat and lower fat content. In all markets there are few if any direct competitors. Where they are present, the chemical purity of R-salbutamol is expected to out-perform current competitors.
